Mermaids have a special place in the mythology of almost every seafaring culture. Stories about them go back to the Sirens of ancient Greece through modern popular culture. Those stories have a universal appeal – mysterious people living in the depths of the vast, unknowable ocean, disregarding the tribulations of daily life. Women of power and beauty singing to passing sailors so they change course. It’s no wonder they remain popular today, especially in Florida. Our sunny weather, beaches and boats are the perfect home for a mermaid community.
Mermaid Cove, in the Cove Shopping Center in Deerfield Beach, celebrates the modern mermaid in all of her glory.
“Mermaids are magic,” explained store owner Casey McNutt. “People love them because they’re mysterious, alluring and powerful. They’re also fun – playing in the water like dolphins all day, hanging out with their pod and splashing around.” Casey and her staff are enthusiastic and fun, taking great care to curate interesting, attractive items for their customers.
Casey knows a lot about playing in the water. She grew up in Texas and, after college, moved to the British Virgin Islands with her husband. They stayed for fourteen years, running a scuba diving business as well as the Filthy Mermaid clothing line. “We were looking to move back to the mainland US to be closer to family. Irma did a lot of damage to the BVI and our business there, so we decided to settle between Texas and the Caribbean.” Casey is rebuilding her scuba business there while building her retail business here. “We have a lot to do, but this shop has been a really fun, great project. I love it!”
Mermaid Cove celebrates the spirit of today’s mermaids – mysterious and sassy, and loving life in the water. The shop features clothes, houseware, toys and jewelry for mermaids of all ages. They also sell swimming tails. The shop is lovely – brightly lit and painted in mermaid colors. The shop features a throne in the store, where a mermaid of any age can celebrate a special day. They rent the throne, as well, to add a special touch to your mermaid party. They will host parties in the shop, for mermaids of all ages.
“We have hosted everything from kid’s parties to bachelorette events,” Casey explained. “We have a dedicated space, and can help you customize your special event.” Mermaid Cove hosts other types of events, too. “We’re looking forward to Mermaid Story Time over the summer, so folks can bring their kids in for a sweet event.”
Mermaid Cove has a number of products for younger children, including soft toys and art kits. In addition to large selection of adult clothes, they stock adorable baby and toddler stuff, all with a mermaid theme. The store features art and accessories from local artists, and is the showroom for The Filthy Mermaid clothing line. The line features shirts and tank tops with mermaid designs and phrases, hats, and shimmery leggings.
Mermaid Cove also sells housewares with mermaid design, including wall art by local artists, glasses, mugs, water bottles, soap and candles. They also offer personal item, such as jewelry, handbags and scarves. Their selection is fantastic, with something whimsical and lovely for everyone.
Casey and her staff can offer personalization on almost any product in the shop, including t-shirts, glasses and the large, insulated bottles that hold 60 oz (that’s two bottles of wine).
The Filthy Mermaid line also offers a monthly Siren Swag Bag subscription – they’ll send you an assortment of gear every month for as long as you like. Sassy and fun, the subscription makes a great gift for yourself, or any of the boaters, beachgoers or mermaids in your life. There is aldo, Mermaid Cove Crate, with age-appropriate gifts now available. Subscription information can be found on www.mermaidcoveshop.com or you can go into the shop and talk to Casey and her staff.
